One of the other problems I see a lot - especially in myself - is that people have no idea how much we are supposed to eat. How many calories are recommended for you to maintain a healthy BMI? How does that translate into what you put on your plate? Yeah... I had no idea either.
What does 200 calories look like?
One of the biggest reasons I see that people are overweight is that compared to fresh fruits and vegetables, chips and hot dogs are pretty damn cheap. I can imagine when you are facing feeding your family for very little money, they can be very tempting. Of course, most of us know that there are cheaper, healthier things to feed your family, but it isn't always as simple as that. We know this based on our points of reference - ie. science class, a mom who made us eat our veggies, etc. Many, many people don't have the same points of reference and really do believe that a chips and hot dogs is a healthy choice. (I live in Mississippi and the way they massacre vegetables down here, it often is a healthy choice, but that is another story.)
Just for fun, check this out.
